Daniel R. Walen of West Boylston, passed away on March 29, 2012 with his beloved family by his side. Daniel is survived by his devoted wife and soul mate of 58 years, Edith D. (Ripoli) Walen; his beloved daughter, Diane Smollin and her significant other, Steven Eichholz; four grandchildren whom he cherished, Shauna, Michael, Jeffrey, and Michelle; two great-grandchildren Ruby and Harrison whom he greatly adored; two godchildren, Rita Job and Sharon Meringolo; a niece, Dot Sharpe; many extended family and a host of friends. His daughter, Donna Henault predeceased him in November of 2009. Daniel graduated from Commerce High School, joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served his country for 5 and 1/2 years. Daniel earned his degree from Worcester Junior College and worked at General Electric Corporation for 32 years before retiring. Daniel was a member of Our Lady of Good Council Church. He loved music and ballroom dancing, and could often be found dancing a Saturday night away with his wife and friends at the Shrewsbury Frohsinn Club. Our "Bumpa" was a generous, kind hearted man of faith, who cherished the times he could spend with his family. He found inspiration in being with and watching them achieve and aspire. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Sunday, April 1st from 3 pm to 6 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral will be held Monday, April 2nd from the funeral home with a Mass at 10:00 am in Our Lady of Good Council Church, 111 Worcester Street. Burial with military honors will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton.
