Robert E. "REM" Murphy, Jr., 47 of Worcester, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 5, 2012 surrounded by his family at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center after a courageous sixteen month battle with AML Leukemia. Robert is survived by his wife of fourteen years, Cristin A. (Alberts) Murphy; two sons, Brett M. and Hunter G. Murphy; a daughter, Scarlett R. Murphy; his mother, Betty Lou (Stevenson) Murphy; two brothers, Michael and Robin "Birdo" Murphy all of Worcester; three sisters, Lisa Murphy of Southbridge, Marcia Murphy of Worcester and Debbie Jolin and her husband Dana of Oxford; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Michael and Geraldine Alberts of Worcester; a brother-in-law, Michael Alberts and his wife Tracy of Leominster; many nieces and nephews. Robert was born in Worcester, a son of the late Robert E. Murphy, Sr. and has lived here all his life. He graduated from the former Worcester Vocational Technical High School. Robert was the Owner/Operator of R.C. Murphy Trucking for ten years. He later worked as a tractor trailer driver for R & M Leasing. Robert was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Gun Owner's Action League. Robert served four years in the Marine Corps and achieved the rank of Lance Corporal. His best moments were playing his guitar, watching the NASCAR races, Monster Jam events, racing go karts with his boys, slot car racing and riding his Harley. His greatest enjoyment in life was his wife and children. He will be deeply missed by them. A memorial service for Robert will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester. A period of calling hours will be held on Saturday, March 10th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the funeral home prior to the memorial service.
