Janet M Cogoli MD

Janet M. Cogoli, MD, 54, of Shrewsbury, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2012 in UMass Hospital after a long courageous fight with Multiple Sclerosis. Dr. Cogoli is survived by two nephews, Vincent Cogoli and his wife Jaclyn and their daughter, Abriana of Auburn and Christopher Cogoli of Worcester. She was predeceased by her brother, William E. Cogoli. Dr. Cogoli was born in Worcester daughter of the late, William J. and Shirley R. (Ledoux) Cogoli. She graduated in only three years, from Shrewsbury High School. She was then accepted to Mount Holyoke College, where she studied Biochemistry and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Janet was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. She was also a Mary Lyon Scholar and a Sarah Williston Scholar. Following her undergrad education, Janet was accepted into the UMass Medical School, where she did cardiovascular research. Doctor Cogoli graduated from UMass Medical School and then began her residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She later became an attending physician at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and Burlington Memorial Hospital, both in New Jersey. In 1988 she returned to Worcester to begin work at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital. She was a member of Saint Mary's Church in Shrewsbury and had just recently published a book "The Other Side, Living with Multiple Sclerosis" a book chronicling her personal experience as a daughter and sister, a physician and as a person living with MS. Calling hours for Dr. Cogoli will be held on Tuesday morning, February 21, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Her Funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. in Saint Mary's Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545. Interment will follow in Saint John's Cemetery, Worcester.
