Cynthia "Sissy" (Scalzo) Cosmo, 71, of North Grafton, a longtime elementary school teacher in the Worcester Public Schools passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 15th 2012 with her devoted sister and family by her side. Sissy's husband of 38 years, Donald L. "Don" Cosmo passed away in 2005. She is survived by the people she loved and cherished, her sister, Joanne M. Yacuzzi of Boylston; her nephews and nieces, Vincent A. Yacuzzi and his wife Angela of Oakham, Nancy Ann Cosimini and her husband Eugene of Boylston; grand nephews and nieces, Vincent Yacuzzi, Jr, Nicholas C. Yacuzzi, Alessandra Cosimini; her aunt, Angela Catino; many extended family and a host of friends. Cindy was born in Worcester, a daughter of Anthony and Nancy (Groccia) Scalzo. She graduated from Commerce High School, earned her Bachelor's and Master's degree in education from Worcester State College and has lived in North Grafton more than 41 years. Cindy worked for the City of Worcester 38 years as an elementary school kindergarten teacher and curriculum specialist, spending her entire career at Union Hill School before retiring in 2000. During her teaching career, Cindy was responsible for the filing and awarding of several grants to the school and for overseeing their success. She was responsible for establishing and the success of Alternative programs in Worcester. Cindy was a member of Our Lady of Loreto Church, its women's guild, and co chairman of the Christmas Bazaar. She along with her sister, volunteered for the past seven years as office assistant's for Our Lady of Loreto. She was a 20 year volunteer for the Church festival and several other committees at the church. Cindy brought Love and kindness to everyone. Her family especially her sister, nephews and nieces were the joys of her life. She had compassion for everyone. Her devotion to her church and the blessed virgin helped her during her recent illness. Her family always came first. We know our "Sissy" is now in Heaven with loved ones gone before. Cindy's funeral will be held Monday, February 20th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St with a Celebration of Life Mass at 10:30 am in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd. Burial will follow in St John Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Sunday, February 19th from 4 pm to 7 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd 01604 or the Umass Memorial Cancer Center, 55 Lake Ave North 01655. Cindy's family would like to extend a special thank you to all the Doctors and Nurses of the 7th floor CCC Unit for their wonderful care and compassion during a difficult time.
