Richard L. Dion, 70, of Worcester, a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife of forty-six years, Nancy M. (Granger) Dion; a daughter, Pamela A. Paskalis and her husband Steven of Holden; a son, Derryl J. Dion of Holden; five grandchildren, Evan, Zachary and Joseph Paskalis, Trevor and Tyler Dion; several nieces and nephews. Richard was predeceased by his sister, Jacqueline O'Brien. He was born in Worcester, son of Francis and Laura (Breault) Dion and has lived here all his life. Richard graduated from Holy Name High School and from Worcester State University. He later served his nation proudly in the Army National Guard of Massachusetts. Mr. Dion worked as a building and code inspector for the City of Worcester, retiring in 2001; he had also worked at Spag's Supply in Shrewsbury. Prior to working for the city, in the Building and Code Department and as a Constable, Richard worked for many years as a store manager for Honey Farms. He was a member of Saint John's Church in Worcester. He was a former a member of The Knights of Columbus and the Vernon Hill American Legion. He was a huge fan of all the New England Sports teams. He was a coach for youth sports in Worcester, including basketball, street hockey, softball and baseball. Calling hours for Richard will be held on Friday, January 27, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., in MERCADATNE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. His Funeral will be held on Saturday, January 28, from the funeral home with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Saint John's Church, 40 Temple Street, Worcester. Interment will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
