John P. "Jack" Markey, 78 of Worcester, passed away peacefully Saturday December 10th 2011, surrounded by family in his home. Jack's wife of 56 years Beverly A. (King) Markey passed away May 6th. He is survived by his devoted children, John P. Markey, Jr. and his wife Christine of Northbridge, Juliann F. (Markey) Hathaway and Kathleen M. Markey both of Worcester; a brother Thomas Markey; a sister, Amelia Piermarini; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; Many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He is predeceased by a sister, Florence Smith. Jack was born in Worcester, a son of Thomas and Amelia (Dufrense) Markey. He graduated from Millbury Public Schools, joined the U.S. Army to serve his country during the Korean War and has lived in Worcester all his life. Jack worked more than 40 years for Wyman-Gordon Company in Grafton before retiring. After retirement Jack was a courier for Fischer Auto Parts for 5 years. He was a member of St Christopher's Church, The United Steelworkers of America Union, the Alhambra Council Knights of Columbus, the Worcester Lodge of Elks and the American Legion Post 341. During the time his children were growing up, Jack coached Ty Cobb Little league "Mass Steel Team". His enjoyment in life centered around horseshoes, and playing cards. He was a superior father whom never got upset and cherished all the times he could spend with his family. They were the inspiration in his life. Jack's funeral will be celebrated Friday, December 16th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. with a Mass at 11:00 am in St. Christopher's Church, 950 West Boylston St. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Thursday, December 15th from 5 pm to 8 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances can be made to The Umass Memorial Hospice, 650 Lincoln St. Worcester 01605 or the American Cancer Society, 350 Plantation St. Worcester 01604. The family of Jack would like to thank The Umass Memorial Hospice team, especially hospice nurse Suzanne Dwinell for the care, compassion, and understanding they gave to them during a most difficult time.
