Leonard W. Johnson, Jr., 81, of 49 Pleasant Valley Drive passed away in Saint Vincent Hospital on Friday, December 2, 2011 surrounded by his loving family after a short illness. His wife and childhood sweetheart of 59 years, Jessie I. (Bates) Johnson passed away March 11, 2010. He is survived by his 9 children, Richard, Keith, Lynnier, Tina, Leonard Johnson III, Derek, Troy, Shawn & Crystal, all of Worcester; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Donald Johnson of Worcester, Richard Johnson of Worcester and Harry Johnson of Holden; a sister, Barbara Carter of New York and many nieces and nephews. Leonard is predeceased by his two sons, Bruce W. Johnson and Craig S. Johnson and a sister, Patricia Johnson. Leonard was born on June 19, 1930, a son of the late Leonard W. Johnson, Sr. and Ethel (Grady) Johnson. He graduated from Commerce High. Mr. Johnson also attended Worcester Industrial Technical Institute. Mr. Johnson was the owner of Johnson's Floor Service for many years. Mr. Johnson began his law enforcement career as a security officer at United States Steel. Mr. Johnson had several jobs of law enforcement involvement to include working at the United States Federal Courthouse located in Worcester. He served our country in the United States Navy aboard both the USS Worcester and USS Massachusetts. Mr. Johnson was an avid golfer in his early years. He also loved to go to casinos and play cards. He was a movie novice and a well versed historian. Mr. Johnson was intimately involved in the lives of several elderly residents in his building. He provided them with companionship and a helping hand whenever needed. Mr. Johnson was a true family man who has always made sure that his family was taken care of and was always there. Mr. Johnson instilled family values in his children that family always comes first. Mr. Johnson loved spending time with his family particularly his grandchilden to share his knowledge about life. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family during calling hours, Thursday, December 8th from 4 pm to 8 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street. A celebration of his life will be held on December 9th at 11:00 a.m. in All Saints Church 10 Irving Street. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery.
