Mary (Dowd) Hilow, 89, of Worcester formerly of Farrar Ave, passed away Monday, November 14th 2011 with her cherished family by her side, nearly six years to the day after her husband of 58 years Joseph T. Hilow passed away. Mary was born November 26, 1921, in Worcester; her parents were the late Kalil and Selma (Husson) Dowd. She and her five siblings were raised and educated in the Grafton Hill section of Worcester. She met and married her husband Joseph, together they raised their three children, Barbara V. LaBree and Joseph P. Hilow, Elaine M. Clarke and her husband Chris. Mary and Joseph then proudly became grandparents to four cherished grandchildren. Sherilyn, Walter and his fiancé Melissa, Jamie and Marina. Mary was also granted with many nieces, nephews, extended family and special friends. Three sisters, Bertha Skaff, Bahia Dowd and Rose Fayard as well as two brothers, James and George Dowd all pre deceased her. Mary was a member of St George Orthodox Cathedral and its women's guild. She found her fondest memories in her Syrian heritage, watching and caring for her much loved family. Mary's funeral will be celebrated Friday, November 18th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. with a service at 12:30 pm in St George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna St. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family from 5 pm to 8 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Staff Fund of Holy Trinity Rehabilitation and Nursing Home, 300 Barber Ave or Icabod Washburn Hospice Residence, 1183 Main St Worcester. The Hilow family would like to extend special thanks to the Staff at both the Holy Trinity Nursing Home, Village Unit and the Icabod Washburn Residence for the compassion, care and understanding they gave to Mary in a difficult time.
