Richard D. Lindberg, 69, a lifelong resident of West Boylston, died Thursday, September 29, 2011 at UMASS Memorial Hospital surrounded by his wife and children. He was born in Worcester, MA on April 20, 1942 to the late Harold and Lillian (Laurilla) Lindberg. He was a graduate of West Boylston High School, Worcester Junior College, and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) School of Industrial Management. Dick worked for 27 years at Norton Company and the Warner & Swasey Company of Worcester as a manufacturing engineer. He then worked for 15 years as the superintendent of Mount Vernon Cemetery in West Boylston before retiring in 2008. His interests included photography, the outdoors, raising tropical fish, model railroading, snowmobiling, bowling, small engine repair, and New England sports. He was a member of the Norco Sportsmen Club. He was passionate about his dogs, gardening, and most importantly, his family. He had an extensive knowledge of Worcester and West Boylston history, horticulture, weather, sports, home repairs and life in general, for which he was a sought after source of advice and mentorship for his family and friends. During his retirement, he most enjoyed relaxing in his yard, playing with his dog, Bolens tractor collecting, and watching his grandchildren and garden grow. Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Jane (Mercadante) Lindberg; his daughter Susan Shanahan and husband Michael of Princeton, his four sons, David Lindberg and his wife Melissa of Dudley, Donald Lindberg and his wife Kimberley of Rutland, Jeffrey Lindberg and his wife Missy of West Boylston, and Dr. James Lindberg and his wife Dr. Kathleen Barry of Charlottesville, VA; a brother Kent Lindberg and wife Martha of Texas, a predeceased brother Dr. Bruce Lindberg and wife Sally of Vermont, his close cousin and neighbor Linda Childs and husband Gary of West Boylston, thirteen grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours for Richard will be Wednesday, October 5th from 6 - 8pm at MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Burial in Mount Vernon Cemetery, West Boylston will be held at 10am on Thursday, October 6th.
