Gerald M. Murphy, 66, of Worcester a decorated Vietnam Veteran passed away Monday, September 19th 2011, two days prior to his 67th birthday, after a long battle with multiple Sclerosis. Gerald was born in Worcester September, 21st 1944, a son of the late Michael T. and Helen (Zimatravich) Murphy. He graduated from St Stephen's High School. He joined the U.S. Army serving 16 years during and after the Vietnam War, as a Combat Medic, earning the Bronze Star and Combat Medic Badge. Upon returning to Worcester he graduated from Quinsigamond Community College with an Associate's Degree in Business Administration. He has lived here all his life. She is survived by a neice, Kathlin Murphy; an Aunt Nellie Wisboro and a cousin Joseph Wisboro all of Worcester. A brother, James Murphy and two sisters, Eleanor Belwich and Maureen Murphy pre deceased her. Gerald worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at Westboro State Hospital more than 21 years before retiring due to illness in 1994. He also volunteered his time with Catholic Charities. Gerald was a member of St John Church. He enjoyed Classical music and was an avid reader. Gerald's funeral will be held Thursday, September 22nd from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St with a Mass at 11:00 am in St John Church, 40 Temple St. Burial will follow in St John Cemetery. A period of visitation will be held from 9:30 am to 10:30 am prior to the mass. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Veterans Inc, 69 Grove St Worcester 01604
