Walter T. "Wally" Maloney, 89, formerly of 299 Plantation St. a proud U.S. Marine who served his country in two War's with honor and distinction , passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 30th in his home. Wally was born in Worcester; his parents were the late, Timothy and Nellie (O'Connor) Sullivan. He attended Sacred Heart Academy and graduated from St Peters High School. He joined the Massachusetts National Guard, and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1939. He served his country during World War II, and later during the Korean Conflict. He has lived here all his life. Walter's 2nd wife Gloria (Hasse) Coomey, Maloney passed away several years ago. His first wife, Irene (Scarcello) Maloney passed away in 1982. He is survived by his four children, Timothy Maloney, his wife Sharon and their children Timothy Patrick, and Kerry of Holden, Cynthia Ellis, her husband Richard of Clinton, Sheila Maloney of Worcester, Gayle Ohman, her husband Thomas and their children Melissa, Thomas Jr., and Matthew of Worcester; He also leaves his stepchildren, John "Skip" Coomey his wife Mary and their children, Brandy and John on Cape Cod, Deborah Micket, her husband Robert and their children Katrina and Timarie, Dana Coomey, Darlene Saffran and her daughter Rachelle all of Worcester; fourteen great grandchildren; Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Wally was the last remaining child of nine, three boys and six sisters, all of whom predeceased him. Walter worked more than 31 years as a Quality inspector for the General Motors Company in Framingham before retiring. He was a member of the former St Margaret Mary Church, an active member of the American Legion Vernon Hill Post and the Marine Corps League Detachment on Lake Ave. A member of the United Auto Workers Union and the Pope John Council Knights of Columbus. Wally was also an avid longtime golf for over 60 years and a fixture on the fairways of Green Hill Golf Course during that time. He was a simple man who was so loved by many. He could be found daily and during most functions at the Marine Corps League in Worcester, telling stories and making everyone laugh and feel comfortable. He always had a smile and could light up any room he entered. His family and dear friends will miss him dearly. Funeral services for Walter will be held Saturday at 10:00 am in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Burial with Full Military Honors will be in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Friday, April 1st from 5 pm to 8 pm in the funeral home.
