Salvatore Scuderi

August 13, 1925 — March 17, 2011

Salvatore "Shorty" Scuderi, of Worcester, passed away Thursday March 17th 2011 at the age of 85, surrounded by his family. Shorty was born in Worcester, MA to the late Anthony and Frances (Spaela) Scuderi. He spent his youth growing up on Shrewsbury Street, learning about the art of pigeon racing, a passion that he followed throughout most of his life, taking pride in winning several pigeon races during his time. Shorty truly had lived a full life in his younger years, from his time hopping freight trains to his time spent in the Merchant Marines. According to Shorty, one of his best accomplishments in life was marrying the late Helena (Swenson) Scuderi. Shorty would say "she changed the destiny of my life." Shorty and Helena were the proud parents of four children; the late Helena Scuderi, Sandra (Scuderi) DiMicele of Bonita Springs Florida, Tina (Scuderi) Phaneuf of Ashland, and Anthony Scuderi of Worcester. Shorty and Helena took great pride in raising their children and seeing the fine adults they had become. Shorty welcomed his children's spouses Jim DiMicele, Heidi (Jones) Scuderi and Matthew Phaneuf, immediately making them feel like part of his family. Shorty was blessed to have 6 grandchildren, Melissa, Justin, Tarryn, Cameron, Colin and Meghan. The grandchildren were his pride and joy, always knowing what each grandchild was doing and always showing interest in their lives. He made each grandchild feel special and they will truly miss him. Shorty also enjoyed the many friends he made throughout his life. From his time spent with his "pigeon buddies" to time spent with friends at Jan's Kitchen and Dunkin' Donuts, he truly appreciated all of their company. Several brothers and sisters have passed before him, including his sister Rose Baumann. He is survived by his sisters Pauline Evans, Frances Holz and Minnie Scuderi. A private memorial service was held based on Shorty's wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Odd Fellows Home in Worcester, MA. The Mercadante Funeral Home & chapel, was honored to assist the family with arrangements.
