Edward N. Haddad, 90, of Worcester passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 16th 2011 in the University of Massachusetts after a brief illness. Ed's wife of 64 years, Marion (Aboody) Haddad passed away in October, 2008. He is survived by one son, Kenneth Haddad of Worcester; four daughters, Carolyn Frost and her husband Brent in North Carolina, Denise Ferraro and her husband Michael in Minneapolis, Christine Dellefemine of Worcester, Maria Testa and her life partner Alan Ward of Worcester; a brother Najer Haddad of Delray Beach Florida; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends. A brother William Haddad and a sister Effie M. Abdelnour all pre deceased him. Ed was born in Worcester a son of Nicholas E. and Mary (Halal) Haddad. He graduated from Commerce High School, attended Holy Cross College and Clark University. He has lived here all his life. Ed ward worked as a Loan Officer/ manager of the Worcester Office of American Investment Co. for thirty three years retiring in 1976. After retirement Ed worked at Garber Travel as a travel consultant. Edward was deeply involved in the administration of St. George Orthodox Cathedral where he served thirty two years on the Parish Council including seven terms as council president. During the cathedrals construction in 1968, he was appointed chief financial officer to manage the collection and accounting of all building fund pledges. In 1975, Mr. Haddad's administration with the help of Fr. Moses organized St. George's Men's Club and established the highly rated St. George Nursery School where he served eleven years as administrator and on July 19, 1977, his Beatitude Elias 4th, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East accepted Mr. Haddad's invitation to serve the Divine Liturgy at St. George Cathedral and as a result this historic event marked the first visit to Worcester by an Orthodox Patriarch. In 1986, as parish council president, Ed was privileged to burn the cathedral's mortgage and through his singular efforts in 1989, he raised the necessary funds to install Italian marble in the church's alter and solea areas. In recognition of his dedicated service, Ed received several citations from the parish and a special award from his Eminence Metropolitan Philip. During the cathedral's centennial celebration in 2002, he was co-chairman of fund raising and the committee honoring the parish's veterans. Ed served as president of the Mahiety Society and as a member of the St. George Brotherhood, the Antioch Society, and the Syrian-Lebanese Club. Ed was also currently involved in the cathedral's visual history museum. Eddie and his wife Marion enjoyed world travel and visited tourist attractions in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean Islands. Ed enjoyed being surrounded by his family. They will miss his sense of humor, his storytelling and love of family and his faith. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Sunday, March 20th from 4 pm to 7 pm and Monday, March 21st from 10:15 am to 10:45 am in St George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna St. His service will be held Monday, March 21st at 11:00 am in the church. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Edward's name to St George Orthodox Cathedral Endowment fund, 30 Anna St. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
