James S. Amar, III, 63 of Worcester, formerly of New York City, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2011 unexpectedly at home. James is survived by two brothers, Peter J. Amar and his wife Mary Fox of Johannesburg, MI and Matt Amar and his wife Kathryn of Pembroke, NH; six nieces and nephews, Jesse, Kristin, Ben, Kris, Will and Katie. He is predeceased by two brothers, Stephen and Vincent Amar. James (Jim to his family) was born in New York City, NY, the oldest son of the late James S. Amar, Jr. and Johanna M. (Rhein) Amar. He grew up in Seaford, NY and graduated from New York City's Regis High School and Pace University. He spent a number of years in jobs ranging from construction laborer to Director of Security for The Big Apple Circus. James had a keen intellect, was a voracious reader, and could hold his own in conversation with most people on most topics. Science and medicine were of particular interest to him. Eventually the written word became his profession, first while editing science texts at McGraw-Hill. In 1992, he moved to Worcester and has been here ever since. He worked for the Telegram and Gazette for nearly 20 years and became a familiar face in a seat on the rim at the end of the newsroom. He was a part-time Copy Editor, editing stories and writing eye-catching headlines and memorable photo captions; handling obits and courthouse records; and catching errors and problems, big and little, in heads and copy on the local desk and rim. The newspaper business is a "constant checking operation" and James epitomized that spirit. A memorial service for James will be held on Tuesday, March 22nd at 3:30 p.m. in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester. His final resting place will be at the Amar family gravesite on Long Island. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Salvation Army in honor of James.
