William H. McHugh, 85, a longtime Shrewsbury resident and employee passed away Thursday, February 24, 2011 with his family by his side. Williams's wife of 62 years, Lucille M. (Stone) McHugh passed away in 2007. He is survived by his beloved daughter Sandra L. Dumais and her husband John of Worcester; two cherished grandchildren, Lisa M. Dumais and Amy J. Eck; three grandchildren, Joshua, Tyler, and Jordan; a brother David McHugh in Worcester and a sister Virginia Woodward on Cape Cod; many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his son, William H. McHugh, Jr as well as four brothers, John, Robert, Donald and Francis McHugh, Jr. and a sister, Beth Ann Gomes. William was born in Worcester; his parents were the late Francis McHugh, Sr. and Gertrude (Grant) McHugh. He graduated from Commerce High School, served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European and Pacific theatres, as a member of the 86th Blackhawk Division, earning the Bronze star medal for actions in battle. He has lived in Shrewsbury more than 50 years. Bill worked for the Town of Shrewsbury over 40 years in the Parks and Recreation Department as Superintendant of Mountain View Cemetery before retiring. Bill was a member of St Anne's Church. At one time, Bill volunteered his time for St Anne's Human Services and as a longtime coach for the Shrewsbury Little League. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family, Sunday, February 27th from 3 pm to 6 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Bill's funeral will be celebrated Monday, February 28th from the funeral home with a Mass at 10:00 am in St Anne's Church, 170 Boston Turnpike Rd. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Mt View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St Anne's Free Medical Clinic, 130 Boston Turnpike Rd. 01545.
