Edith Marilyn Chase Smith, 84, passed away peacefully on 12 February 2011 at the Christopher House in Worcester, MA, after a brief illness. Marilyn was born on 20 July 1926 in Swampscott, MA and was the younger of two daughters born to the late Arthur B. and Edith L. Chase. Marilyn spent her childhood and young adulthood years in Swampscott, MA before moving to Washington D.C. There she served as a clerk for the War Department during World War II. Returning to Swampscott, Marilyn attended Chandler Business School in Boston. Upon completing school, Marilyn accepted a position with the A T Howard Co. of Boston where she met her late husband, Raymond A. Smith. They married on 4 September 1948, and they moved to a small furnished apartment in Beacon Hill, Boston. There they enjoyed the concerts by the Boston Pops on the Esplanade, watching games at Fenway Park and Braves Field, and attending plays at the Shubert and Wilbur Theaters. In 1951, the first of three children were born. Marilyn and Ray moved to Framingham MA in 1956 and purchased a home. Marilyn was a homemaker from 1951 to 1969. After 1969, Marilyn worked as a sales associate for the Jordan Marsh Co. and as a teller with Framingham Savings Bank. Marilyn was active in the Lake Shore Women's Club of Framingham and the Girls Scouts. She also enjoyed music, theater, outdoor gardening activities, and bowling. Marilyn was a sensitive, loving, supportive wife and mother. She was a loyal friend to those whom she crossed paths with in life. She was known to make and distribute sandwiches to Boston's homeless community whenever she went into Boston. Marilyn and Ray remained in Framingham until 1997. They then moved to Sun City, SC, for their final retirement years. Marilyn and Ray were married for more than 60 years. Shortly after Ray's passing in 2010, she moved to Worcester, MA to be closer to family. Marilyn is survived by her sister, Priscilla Howard of Tucson, AZ, three children, Priscilla McGaughey of Temecula, CA, Douglas Smith of Fredericksburg, VA and Andrea Brown of Worcester, MA. Marilyn had five grandchildren, one great grandchild and many close friends. A graveside service is planned for April 30, 2011 where the family will honor and celebrate the lives of Marilyn and Ray. Their ashes will be interred at Edgell Grove Cemetery, Framingham, MA. In lieu of flowers, it is requested any contributions be made to your local Salvation Army
