Mary P. Acciardi (Patierno), a lifelong resident of Worcester, died peacefully in UMass Medical Center on Sunday January 2 after a brief illness. She was 87 years old. She was pre-deceased by her husband, George Acciardi, a decorated WWII veteran who died in 1979, and her beloved brother Patrick Patierno who died in 2005. She is survived by her three children; daughter Patricia Acciardi-Silver of Los Gatos California, and her sons Raymond Acciardi of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Edward Acciardi of Grafton Massachusetts. She also leaves a grandson, Christopher, son of Edward and Jayne Acciardi, a nephew, Patrick Patierno of Ware, MA, and one grand-niece, Beth Pascual of Virginia. She graduated with honors from Commerce High School in 1941 and volunteered as a nurse's aide during WWII. She worked as a clerk at Coughlin Electric Company for over 20 years, retiring in 1988. She was active with the AARP and the Golden Age Club of Shrewsbury, as well as the Guild of Our Lady of Providence. She was a very strong woman who remained active and independent to the end, and she enjoyed traveling and meeting regularly with family and friends for meals and conversation. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at the Mercadante Funeral Home on Thursday January 6 at 5:00.PM A visitation with the family will be held from 4PM to 5 PM. Following the service she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband at Notre Dame Cemetery in Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the UMass Memorial Foundation.
