Joan M. (Belair) Fortin, 78, of Worcester, died peacefully in her sleep at home on Saturday, October 30, 2010. Joan is survived by her former husband, Donald G. Fortin of Auburn; six children, two of whom she lived with and received care from, Raymond R. Fortin and Lisa A. Fortin and her fiancé Dale E. Robertson; another daughter, Cathleen M. Costello and her husband Gary of Auburn; three other sons, Donald A. Fortin and his wife Gail of Overland Park, KS, Paul V. Fortin and his wife Linda and Steven F. Fortin; a sister, Loretta St. Martin and a sister in law and best friend, Betty Ann Fortin all of Worcester; fourteen grandchildren, Kim, Renee, Rachel, Daniel, Joel, Micah, Amanda, Donald, John, Sean, Courtney, Lindsay, Carey and Samantha; seven great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, including Richard Hinsley of Worcester. She also leaves her grand-cats Noelle and Eddy, who spent every day with Joan. She was pre-deceased by a son, Brian M. Fortin and by a granddaughter, Kara Fortin. She was born on January 22, 1932 in North Adams, daughter of Victor and Margaret (Dempsey) Belair. Joan lived her entire life in Worcester and attended the former Commerce High School, before marrying and raising her family. Joan worked as a certified PCA at Hammond House in Worcester for twenty years, before retiring in 1995. She had previously worked as a manager for thirteen years at the former Dalton Rest Home in Worcester. She was a life-long member of the former Holy Name of Jesus Church in Worcester. She was a sixteen year Laryngeal Cancer Survivor, who returned to work at Hammond House, just three months after having her voice box removed, and went on to be honored as "employee of the year" in 1994. She considered her patients as her second family and was a devoted nurse to them. She served on many committees for patient rights and to better their lives. An avid cook and excellent drawer, she also loved to read and play her lottery numbers and scratch tickets. Joan enjoyed television shows and movies, especially James Bond. Joan was most happy at home, with her family. She had an especially close bond with her daughter, Lisa and they were never far apart. Joan and her former husband remained very close friends throughout the years and continued to share each other's company. Her smile and feistiness will be missed by all who knew her. A Memorial Mass for Joan will be held on Friday, November 5, at 11 a.m. in Saint John's Church, 44 Temple Street, Worcester.
