Howard T "Howie" Carney, 66 of Worcester passed away Tuesday, September 14th 2010, in his home with his cherished family by his side. Howie was born October 2nd 1943 in Worcester, a son of Howard L. and Theresa (Ford) Carney. He graduated from St Stephen's High School. He then was drafted by the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Cavalry, earning the Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered in battle. Years later he graduated from Becker College night program with an associate's degree in business and has lived in Worcester all his life. Howie worked for the U.S. Department of Labor almost 25 years as Rhode Island State Director for the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training. He previously worked 22 years as an Ironworker and served as union local treasurer for the International Association of Ironworkers Local 57, assisting in the construction of many Massachusetts Structures. Howard is survived by his devoted wife and partner of 46 years Ann Marie (Fenuccio) Carney; his four children whom he adored, Theresa M. Donaghy and her husband Ron, Christine M. Akerson and her fiancée Joseph Steele, Rosemarie Wilder and her husband David, Howard Carney, Jr. and his companion Jenn Whorton; a brother John Carney and his wife Kathy all of Worcester; four grandchildren, Cassaundra Carney, Brianna and Ron Donaghy Jr., and Erika Akerson; a great granddaughter Peyton; an aunt, Anna (Ford) Loverro; many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends. Howie was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. The International Association of Ironworkers local 57, the Vernon Hill Post American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans chapter #4 and the Alhambra Council Knights of Columbus. Howie loved his family dearly and worked extremely hard to provide for them. He cherished the times he spent with his wife, children and grandchildren. They were a major part of his life. Howie also enjoyed the times he could spend with his wife Ann Marie at Foxwoods, Old Orchard Beach and traveling. He will be greatly missed. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family, Thursday, September 16th from 4 pm to 8 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. The funeral with Military Honors will be held Friday, September 17th from the funeral home with a Mass at 9 am in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton St. Burial will follow in St John Cemetery.
