David P. Carter

February 27, 1949 — August 25, 2010

David P. Carter of Shrewsbury, MA passed away after a brief illness on August 25, 2010 at the age of 61. Born on February 27, 1949 in Attleboro, MA, his musical parents recognized his vocal talents at an early age and he was enrolled in the Columbus Boychoir School (now American Boychoir School). His beautiful tenor voice was appreciated in many choirs including the Master Singers of Worcester, where he sang for many years. David met his wife Nancy E. Phillips at the University of California Berkeley in 1973. David and Nancy joined their lives together in 1974. They enjoyed many years of backpacking, cycling and canoeing together. David had the many talents of the Carter family including carpentry, gardening, and making homemade bear and wine. He and his wife Nancy were founding members of the Gambrinus Society, a local homebrew club. David graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Bucknell University in 1971. After earning a Ph.D. in Immunology at UC Berkeley in 1975, David had a brief career in science before turning his artistic talents to the dying art of traditional dry-laid New England stonewall building in 1985. He enjoyed the solitude of this art and his beautiful "walls, walks, steps and more" will be his monuments for many years to come. David volunteered his time to the early days of recycling in Shrewsbury and also volunteered at the Shrewsbury Public Library before becoming a part time employee. He especially enjoyed re-shelving and organizing books, and literature was a big part of his life. In addition to his wife, Nancy, he is survived by his sister Linda Carter-Jessop of New York and his brother Richard Carter of North Carolina. No services will be held. Please remember David in your own way.
