John D. Cariglia, 89, of Worcester, passed away Friday, August 27th 2010 in Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. John was born May 5, 1921 in Worcester, son of the late Nunzio and Madeline (Forgione) Cariglia. His brother Angelo M. Cariglia passed away August 9th. Another brother Anthony P. Cariglia also pre deceased him. . John is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 63 years, Miranda (Rosati) Cariglia; a daughter, Cynthia and her husband John A. Glynn and a grand dog "Bogey": a son, John D. Cariglia, Jr. and his wife Eileen (Hurley); a sister-in-law, Irene Cariglia all of Worcester; He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. John was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II in both the Pacific and the Atlantic and African Campaigns. He was the recipient of four battle stars for Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Guam and Luzon. John was also in the December 1944 typhoon nicknamed "Halsey's Typhoon" where he was ordered to abandon ship. He was discharged as a Petty Officer First Class. John graduated from the former Commerce High School. After high school he attended the former Worcester Boy's Trade becoming a machinist. He has lived all his life in Worcester. John worked as a machinist at Crompton & Knowles for 40 years. He also worked at Worcester State Hospital for 20 years and was a supervisor evenings at the Lincoln Square Boys Club. John was a member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church and the Eastside Post 201, American Legion. He loved reading books on numerous subjects, doing his word puzzles, listening to music, especially jazz and classical and the occasional Casino trip. John loved all sports, especially the Red Sox, never missing a game on TV. John was the most loving, unselfish, devoted husband and father. He loved his Catholic faith, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and his fellow veteran comrades at the Eastside post. John would jokingly state about his wife: "She's the best wife I ever had." John's funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, August 30th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. with a Mass at 11:00 am in Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery. A period of visitation will be held Monday August 30th from 9:00 to 10:30 AM prior to the Mass. Members of the Eastside Post 201 will meet at 10 am in the funeral home to conduct their ritual. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church Building Fund, 24 Mulberry St. 01604.
