Angelo M. Cariglia, 87, of Worcester, died Monday, August 9th 2010 in the Soldiers Home in Holyoke, MA. after an illness. Angelo was born October 22, 1922 in Worcester, son of the late Nunzio and Madeline (Forgione) Cariglia. He was pre deceased by a brother, Anthony P. Cariglia. Angelo is survived by a brother, John D. Cariglia and his wife Miranda; and a sister-in-law, Irene Cariglia all of Worcester. He is also survived by three nieces, four nephews, four grand nephews and two grand nieces whom he adored and who adored him. He had many loving cousins and friends for whom he always found time for. Angelo was a two war veteran serving in the U.S. Marines Corp during World War II and Korea in the Pacific, and the China/Burma/India campaigns. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant. He graduated from Holy Cross College, earning a liberal arts degree in Philosophy and English and earned his Master's Degree in education and a C.A.G.S. from the former Worcester State Teachers College. He lived all his life in Worcester. Angelo worked as an educator for more than 30 years. He taught English and French for the Plainville Connecticut School System before retiring in the late 70's. Prior to Plainville, he taught at Saint Stephen's School in Worcester, Ma. In 1974, Angelo was honored as Teacher of the Year. He also was a gifted musician who played the trumpet. During the Big Band era, he played with the likes of Patty Paige and at many local Worcester night clubs. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, the Eastside Post 201, American Legion, the Musicians Union Local, The Order of the Purple Knights, Holy Cross Alumni Association, The China Marine Association and The Marine Corps Association.. Angelo was well read on numerous subjects and was an accomplished photographer. He enjoyed traveling to Boothbay Harbor, ME each summer with either his cousins or his nephews. His greatest joy was being with his family, friends and fellow veteran comrades at the Eastside post. Angelo's funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, August 14th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. with a Mass at 10:00 am in Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St. Burial of ashes will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery. A period of visitation will be held Saturday August 14th from 8:30 to 9:30 am prior to the Mass. Members of the Eastside Post 201 will meet at 9 am in the funeral home to conduct their ritual. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church Building Fund, 24 Mulberry St. 01604.
