Joseph Lazaro, 86, of Worcester died peacefully Friday April 9, 2010 surrounded by his loving family in the UMASS Medical Center. His Beloved wife, Elizabeth H. (Harlow) Lazaro died on Monday April 5, 2010. Joseph is survived by four daughters Diane Fruit and her husband Ronald of Fitchburg, Donna Charron of West Boylston, Ann Marie VanAuken and her husband Marty of Princeton, and Cynthia Turner of Woburn, one brother Richard Lazaro of Worcester, one sister, Mary Lazaro of Worcester, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a great great grandson, and many nieces and nephews. Joseph was predeceased by two granddaughters Christina Charron, and Lisa Fruit, three brothers , Albert Lazaro, Alfred Lazaro and George Lazaro who was killed in action during WW11. Joseph was born in Brighton, Ma. son of the late Samuel and Josephine (Camillone) Lazaro and came to Worcester many years ago. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart School. In his younger years he was recruited by the Red Sox Minor League in Melburne Florida as a Catcher, and played in several baseball leagues in the city. He served in the United States Coast Guard as a boatswain mate 3rd class. Joseph was a machinist for the Rockwood Sprinkler Company for over 40 years before he retired. Previous to that he was the owner and operator of the Community Fire Repair Company, and also worked at J.C. Penney company for several years. Joseph was a member of St. Stephens Church, and the Columbus Italian Civic Club. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, bowling , being at the ocean, and visiting with friends. Joe had an affection for all animals. But his most precious times where those spent with his family. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends . Joseph's funeral will be held Tuesday April 13, 2010 from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 370 Plantation St. with a Mass of Christian burial at 11AM in St. Stephens Church 357 Grafton St. A calling hour will be held Tuesday morning only from 9AM to 10:30AM. Interment will be in St. Johns Cemetery.
