Peter J. "Black Pete" DiBenedetto, 80, of Shrewsbury passed away Tuesday, March 2nd 2010 after a long illness with Lung disease. Peter is survived by his devoted wife and partner of 57 years Congetta M. "Connie" (Iafrato) DiBenedetto; two cherished children, Nicholas and Gina DiBenedetto all of Shrewsbury; his best friend Reece; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. A brother, Nicholas J. DiBenedetto pre deceased him. Peter was born in Worcester, his parents were the late Nicholas and Jennie (DeToma) DiBenedetto. He graduated from Worcester Public Schools entered the U.S. Army to serve his country during the Korean Conflict, earning the Bronze Star for actions in battle. He has lived in Shrewsbury more than 40 years. Peter worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service many years before retiring. He previously worked as a truck driver and barber. Peter was a member of St Annes Church, the National Association of Letter Carriers Union. The Eastside Improvement Club, and the Eastside Post 201, American Legion. Black Pete was a member and daily fixture at the Men's Biscegliese Society where he could always be found playing cards. Pete loved fishing, dancing and most of all his family and friends. Peter's funeral will be held Friday, March 5th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. with a Mass at 10:00 am in the Church of Saint Anne, 130 Boston Turnpike Rd. Burial with military honors will follow in Mt View Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Thursday, March 4th from 4 to 8 pm in the funeral home.
