Barbara R Hawley

Barbara R. (Brevard) Hawley, 78, of Worcester passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2010 in San Antonio, Texas while visiting her grandson Johnathan Brown's military training commencement exercises. Her husband, Arthur V. Hawley, predeceased her in 1965. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon L. Brown and her husband John of Johnston, RI and Andrea V. Hawley of Worcester; a step son, Arthur V. Hawley III of Keene, NH; two step daughters, Marilyn Candice Hawley in California and Patti I. Foster in Florida; eleven grandchildren; many great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her three brothers, Robert, Edward and Leslie Brevard. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Robert and Sarah (Perkins) Brevard and has lived here most of her life. Barbara graduated from the Harlem Hospital School of Nursing in New York, and then worked as a Registered Nurse at Worcester State Hospital and Worcester City Hospital. She also worked for the Age Center of Worcester, and as a Teachers Aid and a Parent Liaison for the Worcester Public Schools, retiring in 2004. She was a member of Belmont A.M.E. Zion Church and was active in many community boards and organizations. She was a member of the Prince Hall Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Mass. Teachers Association, National Education Association, Education Association of Worcester, The Worcester Senior Center, and The National Coalition of 100 Black Women-Rhode Island Chapter. She was also the Black Debutant Coordinator from 1980 to 1987. Calling hours for Barbara will be held Monday, February 22, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Her Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, February 23, at 11 a.m. in Belmont A.M.E. Zion Church, 55 Illinois Street, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Belmont A.M.E. Zion Church, 55 Illinois Street, Worcester or the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038 or The American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
