Anthony J. Catanzaro, 83, of Shrewsbury died unexpectedly December 31, 2009 at home.His wife Philomena (Falcone) Catanzaro died in 1988. Anthony is survived by his loving family; a son Anthony J. Catanzaro and his wife Theresa of Harwich, a daughter Carol Conway of Shrewsbury, one brother Mario Catanzaro of Worcester, two sisters Mary Chilorio of Worcester, and Frances Olson and her husband Robert of West Boylston, three grandchildren, Michael A. Conway and his wife Marilyn, Anthony and Christina Catanzaro, a long time companion Mary Kowaleski, cousins Frank and Helen Pusateri, and Anthony and Florence Polito, and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a sister Santina Miano. Anthony was born in Worcester son of the late Vincenzo and Regina (Gagliano) Catanzaro and has lived in Shrewsbury many years. He was a graduate of Fitchburgh State College were he earned his Masters Degree in Education. He was a Navy Veteran on WW11 serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, and was a recipient of a Bronze Star with combat V. Anthony enjoyed being a Teacher in the Worcester Public School Department for many years before he retired. He was a long time member of St. Anne's Church, The East Side Post #201 American Legion, the Greendale retired Men's Club, and a former member of the Sodality of the Holy Cross. Anthony enjoyed cooking, visiting the Cape, and woodworking. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. He will surely be missed by his family and friends. A memorial funeral Mass will be held Saturday January 9, 2010 at 10:00AM in St. Anne's Church 130 Boston Turnpike. There are no calling hours. Burial in Mountain View Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN.38105. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 370 Plantation St. is assisting the family with arrangements.
