Clarence G. "Clarie" Twohig, 80, of Worcester passed away Wednesday, December 2nd 2009 in his home with his loving family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Clarence is survived by his loving wife Alice J. (Discepolo) Twohig; his two devoted daughters, Teresa M. Garney of Holden, Elisa A Ferguson and her husband, Richard of Worcester; four cherished grandchildren, Chantel A. Roberge of Seven Fields, Pa, Brian J. Garney of Harbor Beach, MI serving with the U.S. Coast Guard, Jamieson M. Roberge of Worcester and Jennifer M. Garney of Holden; a great grandchild, Jacoby Kadow of Seven Fields, Pa; a brother, Paul F. Twohig and his wife Margaret of Braintree; a sister, Jeanne Marchand and her husband, Leonce of Topsfield; many nieces nephews and friends. Two brothers, William A. Twohig was killed in action in 1944, during World War II, and Edmond J. Twohig; and two sisters Marie and Margaret Twohig all pre deceased him. Clarence was born in Boston, a son of William A. and Frances C. (Fennell) Twohig. He lived many years in Milton, graduated from Milton High School in 1947, earned his certificate in Machine Design from the Franklin Institute of Boston in 1949; his Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University in 1950. Clarence then served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1956, Clarence completed his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956. He also attended Suffolk University Law School in 1959. Clarence worked many years at Fay Spofford and Thorndike Corporation in Boston and Burlington, as a Draftsman, Designer, Concrete Plant Inspector, and Field Engineer, retiring as Senior Mechanical Engineer & Project Manager. Notably, Clarence worked for the company overseas, in Danang Vietnam on special projects, overseeing construction projects of bridges and other buildings for the government. Clarence then worked many years for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester in various positions such as Construction and Maintenance Engineer; overseeing 2,000,000 sq ft construction of medical center buildings, including the utility plant. He also held positions as Manager of Engineering Services, Chairman of Campus Safety, and as Senior design Engineer, with the task of managing energy conservation projects. At onetime he worked for Sylvania Electronic Systems, Metcalf and Eddy Company in Boston, DMC Engineering and as a consultant for Leroy Alexander Plumbing and HVAC. Clarence worked actively until age 77. He was a member of St Columba's Church, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of American Military Engineers, the American Society of Plumbing Engineers, the American Welding and HVAC Societies. Clarence enjoyed skiing, tennis, golf. He was a loving father and husband, and was especially known for his kindness. A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 5th at 11:00 a.m. in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Burial will follow inn Moreland Cemetery, Paxton. A period of calling hours will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
