Joseph M. Mattero, Sr., 69, of Shrewsbury passed away Monday, November 23rd 2009 in his home surrounded by his loving family after courageous battle with bladder cancer. . Joe was born June 26th 1940 in Shrewsbury; his father was the late Patsy A. Mattero. He grew up in Shrewsbury, graduated from Shrewsbury High School and earned his degree from Worcester Junior College. He lived 25 years in Worcester before moving back to Shrewsbury. Joe is survived by his four children, Joanne C. Parenti and her husband Joseph of Millbury, Joseph M. Mattero, Jr. and his wife Mae, in Worcester, Patsy A. Mattero of Smithfield, R.I. and his companion Marcia Coker; Jodi A. Fortunato and her husband Nicholas of Auburn; his fiancée Mary J. Johnson; his mother, Margaret M. (Perna) Mattero ; and a brother, James N. Mattero and his wife Peggy all of Shrewsbury; six cherished grandchildren, Sarah, Franky, Jacqueline, Vinny, Sofia and Giuliana; his former wife, Antoinette "Ann" (Etre) Mattero; many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family including Erica Gilmore, Carrie, Michael and Timothy Johnson; and his best friend Allie. A daughter, Patricia Ann Mattero passed away November 11th of 1964. Joe worked in the service department of Millbury Ford for over 15 years before retiring. He previously worked as a manager for Phalo Corporation 32 years. At one time he also worked in the family bakery Mattero's. He was a member of St. Anne Church, the IAVC, the ITAM Club and the Adelphi Council Knights of Columbus. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and member of the Singletary, Leicester, and Northboro Rod and Gun Clubs. He enjoyed traveling, the beach, Cape Cod and Maine with his fiancée Mary. But his greatest love was his family whom he treasured dearly. Joe's funeral will be held Monday, November 30th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anne Church, 130 Boston Turnpike Rd. Shrewsbury. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Sunday, November 29th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Members of the Adelphi Council Knights of Columbus will meet at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home to conduct their ritual.
