Worcester-- Genevieve B. Powers, 94, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2009. She was born in 1915 in Worcester, the daughter of Vincent and Mary Maciejka, who emigrated from Lubca, Galicia, Poland and settled in Worcester in 1907. Mrs. Powers was predeceased by her husband James Powers, a retired Worcester Policeman in 1994 and her beloved son, James (Jimmy) who passed in 1960. Genevieve had two brothers, John and Frank Maciejka, who are deceased, Margaret Saunders and Florence Maciejka, who are also deceased. She leaves behind her son Kevin D. Powers and his wife Susan of Longmont, Colorado; her daughter Kathleen A. Powers and her companion Stephen Congram of Worcester; two grandchildren, Kurt Powers of Washington, D.C., and Kristen Powers of Arlington, Virginia. She also leaves behind her special friend and niece, Virginia (Gigi) James and her children and great nieces Michaela James, Rebekah James, and Olivia James, who should be remembered because they gave great hugs. Genevieve, also known as Gert' graduated from Saint Mary's Our Lady of Czestochowa High School in Worcester and spent a lifetime enjoying her family and friends with a boundless sense of energy. During the depression, she worked as a "stitcher" in the Heywood Building in Worcester and made custom suits with her best friend Sophia Tabor for those who could afford them, she also worked for Dulmaine Brothers-Tie Manufacturers. Genevieve was a member of Saint Stephen's Church, Worcester Police Wives, and the Elks Club of Worcester. She loved to dance, sew, knit, shop, work in her yard; and spoke three languages fluently traveling extensively throughout Europe, Asia, the America's and the Caribbean. She was blessed with the gift of gab, telling her travel stories and sharing her finds with her friends, children, and grandchildren that she loved so much. Gert will be remembered and loved as a person who was full of life and who showed strength and competence in providing the necessary care for many members of her family and friends throughout the years. Every life matters in this world and this one will be missed dearly by those who knew and loved her. Her funeral will be held Tuesday, November 24, from MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOM E& CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Saint Stephen's Church, 357 Grafton Street, Worcester. Interment will follow in Saint John's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Monday, November 23, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
