Anthony J. "Tony" Virga, 84, of Worcester, died peacefully at home Saturday October 24, 2009 surrounded by his loving family. His wife Mildred M. (Urso) Virga died in 1991. He is survived by his devoted daughters; Lori A. Costello and her husband Thomas A. Costello, and Lisa M. Virga. also one granddaughter whom he adored Gianna M. Costello all of Worcester, and many nieces and nephews here and in New York. He was predeceased by a brother Russell Virga, and two sisters Frances Marra, and Catherine Bruscato. Anthony was born on May 22, 1925 son of the late Rosario and Crocifissa ( DiChiara) Virga and came to Worcester in 1960. He was a graduate of Boston University and attended the Vesper School of Arts. Anthony retired in 1990 as a long time employee of the State of Massachusetts. Tony was a long time member of Our Lady of Loreto Church, and their Leisure Club. He was also a member of Our Lady Of Mt Carmel-St Ann Church, The Pope John XX111 Council Knights Of Columbus, The Worcester Lodge #168 Son's Of Italy in America, and was a volunteer over twenty years for the Foothills Theatre. Anthony enjoyed painting and appreciated the Arts. He enjoyed being with his family. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends. Anthony's funeral will be held Wednesday October 28, from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 370 Plantation St. with a Mass of Christian burial at 11AM in Our Lady Of Loreto Church 37 Massasoit Rd. Visiting hours with the family are from 5-8PM on Tuesday in the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Johns Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to The United Way-Central Mass in care of the Handicap Ramp Division 484 Main St.Worcester MA.01608.Members of the Pope John Council will meet at the funeral home at 7PM to conduct their ritual.
