Fred William Hedberg, 92, of Worcester, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2009 in the Rose Monahan Hospice Residence. His wife, Frances A. (Valinski) Hedberg, pre-deceased him in 1991. Fred is survived by his son, William F. Hedberg and his wife Sabine Hedberg of Maynard; a sister, Marion Wise of Worcester; two grandchildren, Nathan Hedberg of Maynard and Meagan Cotter and her husband Jesse of Clinton; several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his daughter, Beverly Hedberg and by a brother, Carl Hedberg. Mr. Hedberg was born in Worcester, son of Carl and Hilda (Rask) Hedberg and has lived here all his life. During World War II , Fred served his nation proudly in the United States Navy. Fred worked as a machinist for Astra Pharmaceutical in Westborough. He had previously worked for Arter Grinding in Worcester for many years. As an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener, Fred was an outdoorsman and a lover of nature. Fred loved the simple things in life, like spending time with family and friends, sitting under the shade of the apple trees in his backyard, going blueberry picking and rides to New Hampshire, a state he truly loved. Fred's sense of humor served him well right up to his final days. Quick with a joke, Fred lived life well. He will be missed The funeral for Mr. Hedberg will be held Wednesday, October 14, at 1 p.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Interment will follow in Saint John's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the funeral home, immediately before the funeral service.
