Joseph Quaglieri, 87, of Shrewsbury, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, September 27th 2009. Joseph was born May 11th 1922, in Worcester, a son of Bernardo and Maria (Icovelli) Quaglieri. He was educated in the Worcester Public schools. He enlisted in U.S. Navy to serve his country during World War II, aboard the Battleship U.S.S. Iowa, taking part in more than 10 battles in the Pacific and Philippines. Joseph was aboard the Iowa when it carried then President Roosevelt and his aides to and from the Tehran conference in North Africa, with Prime Minister Churchill and Russia's Joseph Stalin. During his service time Joseph earned decorations and awards including the Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal with eight battle stars, and the Philippine Liberation Medal with two battle stars. He returned home to Worcester and moved to Shrewsbury more than 40 years. Joe worked for the Teamsters local 140, as a truck driver for the DeFalco Concrete Company more than 35 years. After retirement Joseph most enjoyed his winters in Lake Wales Florida and his summers in Shrewsbury. Joe is survived by a sister, Lucille Paradis of Worcester; many nieces, nephews and friends. Three brothers, Francis, Anthony and Michael Quaglieri, and three sisters, Pauline Ventresca, Bernice Caputo and Grace Aucoin all pre deceased him. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 1st at 11:00 a.m. in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Burial will follow in Mt View Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis Tenn.
