Earl R. "Pete" Barrett, 84, of Spencer, formerly of 17 Dominion Rd. passed away Friday, July 24th 2009 at the Meadows of Leicester Nursing Home. Pete's wife of 35 years, Grace A. (Pannese) DeFlavio-Barrett , whom he spent many years lovingly caring for as she battled illness, passed away in 2004. He is survived by three daughters with his former wife Lena Thienel, Barbara Gebo and her husband Edson of Spencer, Doris Seymour and her husband Walter of Leicester, Linda Hicks and her husband Jack of Dudley; four step children, Stephen DeFlavio and his wife Mary of North Carolina, Diane Maguire of Houston, Texas, Joan DeFlavio-Isam and her husband Albert of Austin, Texas and Linda McInerny and her husband James of Holden, 20 grandchildren,10 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Pete was pre deceased by his son, Richard "Rick" Barrett in 1989, a daughter, Theresa Bechard in 2008, a stepson Michael DeFlavio also in 2008, two sisters, Loretta Domey and Doris Garry. Pete was born in Worcester, son of Charles A. and Arlene (Riquier) Barrett. He graduated from Worcester Schools, entered the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II and has lived here all his life. Pete worked for the State of Massachusetts, at Quinsigamond Community College for over 21 years before retiring in 1986. He was a member of the former St. Margaret Mary Church and the State County and Municipal employees association. Pete was a Sea Scout master as well as a Notary Public for many years. He enjoyed his carpentry/woodworking hobbies, he was an avid fisherman and spent many summers fishing in Cape Cod. By trade he was a painter and wallpaper hanger, which he had learned from his father. The funeral will be held Tuesday, July 28th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St with a Mass at 12 noon in St. Anne Church, 130 Boston Turnpike Rd. Burial will be at Notre Dame Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours, Monday, July 27th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
