Francis J. Penny, 88, of Worcester, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, July 20, 2009, surrounded by his loving family at home. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-seven years, Rita (Incutto) Penny. Mr. Penny is also survived by his beloved family including his four cherished daughters, Linda M. Chalifoux, wife of the late Paul Chalifoux, Beverly A. Cariglia and her husband Peter P. Cariglia, Diane M. Penny-McCarthy and her husband Stewart E. McCarthy, and Patricia A. Nims and her husband Steven A. Nims all of Worcester; six brothers, Robert Penny, Joseph Penny, and William Penny all in Florida, Vincent Penny, Samuel Penny, and David Penny all of Worcester; nine grandchildren, Cheryl Shea, Michelle Hillman, Leanne Chalifoux, Danny F. Genese, Robert M. Genese, Matthew Genese, Francis McCarthy, Lisa Nims, and Steven Nims; nine great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Walter and Fredrick Penny. Francis was born in Worcester, son of Samuel and Harriet (Sullivan) Penny, and has lived here all his life. He graduated from Saint Stephen's School and from Worcester Boy's Trade, before serving his nation proudly in the United States Coast Guard, during World War II. Franny was a foreman for New England Power, where he worked for thirty-four years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Our Lady of Loreto Church, Brown Square Civic Club, and the former I.T.A.M Club. He was an undefeated New England swimming champion for several years, in his youth. Franny was a blessed with a wonderful family and life, and was quite proud of the Irish-Italian-American heritage they have. He enjoyed holidays, watching football or shooting pool, as long as he was with his family. The funeral for Mr. Penny will be held Thursday, July 23, from MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester, with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 33 Massasoit Road, Worcester. Entombment will follow in Saint John's Mausoleum. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, July 22, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
