Eileen (McCarthy) D'Elia, 87, died unexpectedly Tuesday May 12, 2009 in the UMASS Memorial Center. Her husband, Ralph D'Elia died in 1969. Eileen is survived by her loving family; a son John "Jackie" D'Elia and his wife Janice of Worcester, son in law Dr. Thomas S. Lanava of South Carolina. five grandchildren; John D'Elia of Worcester, Diane Silver of Grafton, Steven D'Elia of Worcester, James Lanava of Worcester, and Robert Lanava of Leonia N.J. Eight great grandchildren; Aimee, Anthony, Megan, William, Ryan, Benjamin, Sophia and Grace and many nephews and nieces. Eileen was predeceased by a daughter Mary Ellen Lanava, and a sister Marie Bresnahan, and two brothers, Eugene and Daniel McCarthy. Eileen was born in Worcester daughter of the late Eugene and Nellie T. (Coleman) McCarthy and lived here all her life. Eileen was a Teachers Aide at Gage St. School for many years before she retired. She was a proud and active member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel-St. Ann Church. She was a member of its Golden Years Club, The 49'ers Club, the Sacred Heart Academy Mothers Club, and The Women's Auxiliary of the Salvation Army. Eileen was always there to help especially for many church functions through the years. She had a quick wit and was always enjoyable to be with. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends. Eileen's funeral will be held Thursday from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 370 Plantation St, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM in Our Lady of Mt Carmel-St Ann Church 24 Mulberry St. Calling hours will be held from 5-8PM on Wednesday. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Friends of Mercy in care of the Mercy Centre, 25 Westchester St. Worcester, Ma. 01605.
