George C. DiTerlizzi, 86, of Shrewsbury, passed away Monday May 11th in the University of Massachusetts Hospital after being stricken ill earlier. George's wife of 63 years, Rita J. (Palumbo) DiTerlizzi passed away in April of 2007. He is survived by his two devoted sons, Frank DiTerlizzi and his wife Maureen, James DiTerlizzi and his wife Angela; a sister, Congetta R. "Connie" Simone all of Shrewsbury; three cherished grandchildren, Sheree Gaus, James DiTerlizzi and Melissa Flanagan; two great grandchildren Evan and Elena; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Two brothers, Leonardo "Leo" and Michael DiTerlizzi predeceased him. George was born in Worcester, a son of Frank and Rosa (Simone) DiTerlizzi. He attended Shrewsbury High School, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medals for wounds suffered in Battles of the Pacific Theatre and has lived here all his life. George worked more than 15 years for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at Worcester State Hospital before retiring. He previously worked for New England Manufacturing and the L. Farber Corporation. George was a member of the Victor Quaranta Post 397, American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans Post #4. He was a devoted father, grandfather and brothers, who enjoyed working in his garden, cooking and fishing, but his family was what brought him the most joy in his life. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 14th at 11:00 a.m. in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Burial will follow in Mt. View Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family; Wednesday, May 13th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
