Statia A. (Smola) Biegay, 80, of Auburn passed away peacefully in her home Tuesday, April 28th 2009. Statia is survived by her husband of 52 years, Raymond J. Biegay; two daughters, Paula Huggard and her husband James of Auburn, Karen Thornton and her husband Craig of Oxford; four cherished granddaughters, Emma and Laura Huggard, Caitlin and Amanda Thornton; a brother, Stanley Smola of Rutland; several nieces and nephews. A brother, Raymond Smola, and two sisters, Amelia A. Henault and Wanda Jackiewicz all predeceased her. Statia was born November 13, 1928, in Holden, a beloved daughter of Stanley Smola and Bertha (Bapchi) Bielaska Smola. She grew up in the Jefferson section of Holden, attended Holden High School and has lived in Auburn since 1956. Statia worked many years for the former Filene's Department store in downtown Worcester before staying at home to raise her daughters. She was a member of St. Joseph's Parish. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks for the loving care and compassion shown to Statia by Dr. Kevin Delacey, his staff, the Auburn District Nurse Association, Jewish Home Hospice, and the wonderful women of Harmon Home Health, with special thanks to Patti Furmanick and Marguerite Imse. Statia's funeral will be held Friday, May 1st from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St Worcester with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 189 Oxford St. Auburn. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family, Thursday, April 30th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The family respectfully requests that flowers be omitted; memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association , 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, Ma 02472.
