Shrewsbury - Charles D. "Charlie" Latino, 82, of Shrewsbury passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 24th , 2009, in his home surrounded by devoted family. Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Shirley P. (Bombard) Latino; four sons, Wayne Latino and his wife, Claire, of Franklin, Peter Latino of Princeton, Paul Latino and his wife, Joanne, of Worcester, and Jon Latino and his wife, Sherry, of Worcester; four sisters, Stella Nelson of Brookfield, Rose Santoro of Grafton, Nina Alicandro of Florida, and Gloria Volks of Shrewsbury; A brother, Raymond Latino of Boston; nine cherished grandchildren, John and Matthew Latino, Alanna Rich and her husband, Christopher, Brian Monagle and his wife, Kim, Melissa, Amanda, Kristina, and Nicholas Latino; two great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Victoria Rich; many family members and friends who will miss him dearly. Mr. Latino was born in Worcester, son of Raymond and Nina (Pusateri) Latino. He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade and later earned his engineering degree from Worcester Institute of Technology (Witti). At 17, he volunteered for the Navy (Seabees) to serve his country in World War II and received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in the invasion of Okinawa. Charlie worked at Norton Company and Varian Associates as a manufacturing engineer for 38 years before retiring. Charlie and Shirley enjoyed many years of retirement at home in Shrewsbury, on Cape Cod and in Palm Bay Florida. Charlie was a member of St. Mary's Church in Shrewsbury and the Victor Quaranta Post American Legion. He enjoyed watching his sons' sports activities through the years, often taking part as coach, and he also took joy in watching professional sports with his boys. Mr. Latino's ultimate enjoyment was spending time with his wife and family. The funeral will be held Friday, March 27th from the Mercadante Funeral Home, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester, with a mass at 9:30 am in St. Mary's Church, 640 Main St. Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Thursday, March 26th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
