Hazel P. Hobin, 84, formerly of East Rutherford, NJ, passed away peacefully at home in Worcester, on February 14th 2009 after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, William M. Hobin in 1999. Hazel is survived by a son, Dr. Wayne P. Hobin, of Salem, SC; two daughters, Dr. Lynn D. Hobin, of Wake Forest, NC; Gail E. Dickson, and her husband, Matthew, of Boylston, MA. Hazel graduated from Montclair State College with her teaching degree and set out in education in mathematics in Passaic High School. She soon moved to her alma mater, East Rutherford High School where she became math department chairperson and stayed until her retirement in 1989 having served 35 years in this school system. She was a dedicated teacher and well loved by both her colleagues and students, serving as a mentor for many. During her tenure at East Rutherford High School and later Becton Regional High School she continued to advance her education by receiving a Master's degree in mathematics from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME. She coached the Math League and was instrumental in developing curriculums for the school district. She was very active in local bridge clubs and the United Methodist Church in Rutherford and after her retirement in Clemson, SC. Bill and Hazel retired to Keowee Key in Salem, SC and became active members in the community. They shared a love for golf, the water, playing bridge, and travel. Hazel continued to use her mathematics skills by volunteering her skills to help those in the surrounding communities who had difficulty filling out their taxes. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 14th at 11:30 am, in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester, A period of visitation with the family will be held from 11 am to 11:30 am in the funeral home prior to the service.
