James V. Abato, 85, of Worcester, passed away Monday, February 16th 2009, after an illness. James wife of 48 years, Frances R. (Mangano) Abato passed away in 1994. James is survived by his devoted daughter, Diane M. Bolivar of Worcester; two grandchildren, Carrie Bolivar of Denver and Jamey Abato in Biddeford, Maine; nieces and nephews. A brother, Frank Abato and a sister, Antoinette Waruzila pre deceased him. James was born in Worcester; his parents were Gennaro and Raffaela (Ciani) Abato. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and has lived here all his life. Jimmy worked more than 12 years for the City of Worcester Parks Department, four years as caretaker of Crompton Park. before retiring in 1988. James previously worked 30 years as a Baker for D'Amico's Bakery, Boston and Bond Bread Companies. James was a member of Our Lady of Loreto Church, the International Association of Confectioners Local 251 and the State County and Municipal Employee's Association. The funeral will be held Saturday February 21th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. with a mass at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. A period of calling hours will be held Saturday, February 21th from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. prior to the funeral. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in James name to Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd. 01604. James family would especially like to publically thank the Life Care center of Auburn for the special care, comfort and understanding they provided to their father during his time there.
