Oliver, 74, of Grafton Street in Worcester, passed away, Tuesday, August 26, 2008 in UMass Hospital, after a very brief illness. He leaves his wife of nearly fifty- three years, June C. (Tagman) Oliver; two daughters, Jane Oliver, p.f.m. Little Franciscans of Mary, of Whitefield, Maine, and Susan Hikel of Pflugerville, Texas; two sons, Stephen M. Oliver of Worcester and Edward G. Oliver and his wife Claudia of Rindge, New Hampshire; a brother, Thomas E. Oliver of Holden; a sister, Nancy Duquette of Leicester; eight grandchildren, Lily, Jonathan, Priya, Michael, James, Andrew, Christopher, and Amy; three great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Gerald was born in Worcester, son of Thomas F. and Anna M. (Regele) Oliver and has been a resident all his life. He joined the United States Air Force and served this nation during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Oliver worked for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette for over twenty years as a promotional salesman in the circulation department, retiring in 1988. Following his retirement he became a bartender at Worcester Country Club, and returned on a part time basis to the Telegram, where his was currently working as a night delivery driver. As a young man Gerald worked at the former Henry L. Hanson Tool Company in Worcester. Gerald was a member of The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Stephen. He played in the Telegram & Gazette Bowling League, and enjoyed playing softball. Gerald was a craftsman, and was featured in the Telegram & Gazette for his Christmas Village, that occupied several rooms, at home, during the holiday season. He also enjoyed music of all types and had a vast collection of recordings. The funeral for Gerald will be held Saturday, August 30 from MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester, with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Saint Stephen's Church, 357 Grafton Street, Worcester. Interment will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours will be held Friday, August 29 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
