Edwin F Symonowicz, 84 of Bristol St, passed away, Sunday, July 27, 2008, in Knollwood Nursing Home after a short illness, with family at his side. His wife of 59 years, Helen C Symonowicz, died in 2005. Two brothers, William V. Symonovicz and Michael Symonowicz, and a sister, Jenny Madalena also predeceased him. He leaves a daughter, Donna M Barton and her husband John, Ed's principal caregiver, of Holden; a son, Michael S. Symonowicz and his wife Karen of Palm Bay, Florida; 3 grand-children, Derek E. Barton of Holden, Lindsey Symonowicz of Gaithersburg, MD and Erin Symonowicz of Alexandria, VA; three great grand-children, William George Barton of Connecticut, Sean Sequist of Connecticut, and Braeden Schubert of Maryland; his sister in law and brother in law, Aulie and Orlando Valanzola; his God daughters, Debra Millspaugh, Ann Janette, and Denise Nordstrom; several nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester March 24, 1924. He served in the First Marine Division in WWII from 1942-1945 in the Pacific Theatre with campaigns in Cape Gloucester/New Britain, Peleliu Island and Okinawa. He was the organizer and one of the founders of the Ted Williams Little League in 1955, serving as President, Manager/coach and Umpire-in chief. He was coach of CYC basketball teams at St. Paul's Cathedral for 15 years He was Cub master of Pack # 100 ( St. Paul's Cathedral) Ed was credit manager and store manager of the Shrewsbury store for Demers Tires for many years. He was a Life member of the Marine Corps League/Worcester Detachment, U.S. Navy Foundation, VFW, American Legion, PAV, First Marine Division Association, WWII Museum, Statue of Liberty at Ellis Island Foundation. He was a member of St. Christopher's Church in Worcester for almost 40 years. His funeral will be held Wednesday, July 30, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St, Worcester with a Mass at 10 AM in St. Christopher Church, 306 West Boylston St, Worcester. Burial with military honors will be held in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, July 29, from 5p.m. until 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
