Samuel J. Palermo, 88, of Worcester passed away Sunday, January 20th 2008, in the University of Massachusetts Hospital after a brief illness. Sam's first wife Phyllis (Cangello) Palermo passed away in 1958. He is survived by his devoted wife and partner of thirty four years, Antoinette R. (Mazzone) Marzilli, Palermo; his beloved children, Elaine Hamel of Hyannis, Joseph Palermo, Michele Werme and her husband James all of Worcester, Anthony Marzilli and his wife Elaine of Shrewsbury, Joseph Marzilli and his wife Peggy of Holden; a daughter in law, Karen Marzilli in Maryland; thirteen grandchildren, Joseph Hamel, Thomas Werme and his wife Kirsten, James Werme, Jr. and his wife Sally, Christopher Marzilli and his wife Liza, Thomas, Stacey, Joseph, Anthony, Thomas and Marisa Marzilli; four great grandchildren, Cameron, Olivia, Antonio and Gio; a brother, Anthony Martello and his wife Judy; a sister, Ann Candella and her husband Albert; many nieces and nephews. A son, Thomas Marzilli passed away in 2004, a granddaughter Meredith Marzilli passed away in 2006, a son in law Francis Hamel passed away in 1999. Three sisters, Ida Brunelle, Mary DeMauro and Rosina Festa also pre deceased him. He was born in Worcester, a son of Antonio and Angelina (Paccitta) Palermo. He graduated from North High School and Worcester Junior College, served in the U. S. Army during World War II and has lived here all his life. Sam worked more than twenty two years as a Veterans Service Agent for the City of Worcester before retiring in 1985. He was a member of St Margaret Mary Church, a founding member of the Columbus Civic Association, and an avid sports fan. Sam's most enjoying times were those he shared with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends. Sam's funeral will be held Thursday, January 24th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. with a mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary Church, 75 Alvarado Ave. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery. A period of visitation will be held Thursday, January 24th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the mass.
