Martin L. Fernsten, 85, of Worcester, formerly of Woodland St, West Boylston, passed away Tuesday, January 22nd in St. Vincent Hospital. Martin is survived by his devoted wife and partner of 63 years, Mary A. (D'Ambra) Fernsten; two beloved sons, Martin R. Fernsten and his wife Lynda of Auburn, Jeffrey A. Fernsten and his wife Linda of Amherst; a cherished daughter, Pamela A. Lefferts and her husband William of Woodstock CT; a sister, June C. Rice of Worcester; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Martin was born in Koping, Sweden, a son of Martin T. and Anna K. (Broman) Fernsten, and came to this country through Ellis Island in 1924. Martin graduated from Commerce High School in 1940, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the War, Martin earned his Bachelors degree in Economics from Boston University in 1950. He grew up in Worcester, lived many years in West Boylston before moving back to Worcester. Martin worked as an electrical Engineer more than 45 years for Norton Company and two years for Raytheon Corporation before retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Greendale Retired Men's Club, and the Boston Post 462, American Legion. He was an enthusiastic golfer and was once a member of the Bay Path Gold League. Martin loved to travel and spending winters in Florida. He was a very much a family man who loved the time spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, sister and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 26th at 10:30 a.m. in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL; 370 Plantation St Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. Calling hours will be held Friday, January 25th from 5 p.m to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
