Luigi Cognoni

Luigi Cognoni, 94, of Shrewsbury, formerly of Redstone Hill Road in Sterling, passed away, Sunday, June 8, 2009, in Memorial Hospital. His wife, Mary (Emrick) Cognoni, passed away in 1994. He is survived by a daughter, MaryJo Gerolomo of Worcester; two granddaughters, Lisa Nelson and her husband, Brian of Worcester, and Christine Howarth and her husband Todd of Oxford; two great grandsons, Matthew and Michael Nelson. He was born in Milford, son of Nazaro and Mary (Balzarini) Cognoni. Mr. Cognoni worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a fireman at the Industrial School for Girls in Lancaster. He had previously worked for Supernant Wire Company in Clinton. He also operated the Stone Crest Farm in Sterling for fifty years. The funeral for Luigi will be held Thursday, June 12, from MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester, with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 33 Massasoit Road, Worcester. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Sterling. A calling hour will be held from 9 a.m.until 10 a.m., in the funeral home, immediately prior to departing for church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nicholas J. Gerolomo Scholarship Fund, in care of Holy Name High School, 144 Granite Street, Worcester, MA 01604.
