Lena (Simoncini) Iaconi, 88 of Shrewsbury, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away Friday, February 8th 2008 in the Memorial Hospital. Lena is survived by her husband and partner of 62 years Chester J. Iaconi; an adored daughter Francesca M. Iaconi and her husband John B. Whalen of Shrewsbury; a daughter in law, Jane (Ventres) Iaconi of Worcester; three sisters, Elsie Lachapelle in Florida, Mary Amoruso in California and Iris Grimaldi of Worcester; four beloved grandchildren, Teresa and A.J. Iaconi, Johnny and Lena Whalen; many nieces and nephews. Her son, Angelo F. "Chester" Iaconi passed away February 9th, 2004, two brothers, Joseph "Joe the Cop" Simoncini, and Rico Simoncini also predeceased her. Lena was born in Worcester, daughter of Angelo and Assunta (Marcucci) Simoncini. She graduated from Commerce High and has lived in Shrewsbury since 1956. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church and its golden years, the Shrewsbury Women's Club, and the Eastside Post 201, American legion, Women's Auxiliary. Lena loved to knit and over the years made many beautiful sweaters and afghans for her children, grandchildren and family. She was a fabulous cook and loved to care for her family and her house. Lena and her husband also loved to travel. They took trips to many spots around the world. Lena's funeral will be held Tuesday, February 12th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St with a mass at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Monday, February 11th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m in the funeral home.
