Joseph D. ("Sookie") Martinez, 79, formerly of King Philip Road, died peacefully Saturday June 7, 2008 at Autumn Village. Joseph is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Lorraine L. (Fugere) Martinez of Worcester and five daughters: Jacqueline M. Lear of Worcester, Jeanne M. Moriarty of Hampden, Joanne L. Flynn of Thompson, CT, Joyce A. Tauras of Windham, NH, and Jodi M. Curtin of North Andover. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a sister, Minerva Lazour of Brockton. A brother, Louis C. Martinez, and two sisters, Lillian Hoff and Viola Desrosiers pre-deceased him. Joseph was born in Worcester, son of Louis and Rose Anne (Rivers) Martinez and lived here all his life. He was a graduate of Blessed Sacrament School and attended South High School. He was an Army veteran serving during the occupation of Japan. Joseph worked for the Harrington Richardson Company for many years and later was employed by Coppus Engineering for twenty years before he retired. Joseph's many interests included fishing, cooking, classic films, and history. He was a lifelong Yankee's fan and always remembered fondly his time playing football for the Army. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends. Private funeral services and burial in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton, will be held at the family's convenience. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME AND CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. is assisting the family with arrangements.
