George N. "Bob" Kalil, 91, of Shrewsbury, devoted husband, father, grandfather, passed away Saturday, March 8th in the University of Massachusetts Hospital surrounded by his family. Bob is survived by his beloved wife and partner of 61 years, Doris G. (Brodeur) Kalil; his five cherished children, David G. Kalil of Westerly R.I., Lisa A. Malesky and her husband John of Auburn, Peter G. Kalil of Shrewsbury, Stephen P. Kalil and his wife Laurie of Worcester, Susan M. Collins and her husband James of Shrewsbury; eight grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends. Four brothers, Michael, Joseph, John, and Albert Kalil, and three sisters, Helen Aboody, Ella Dahrooge, and Eva Saffire all pre deceased him. He was born in Worcester, one of eight children born to Nicholas and Sophie (Najar) Kalil. He grew up in Worcester, graduated from North high and has lived in Shrewsbury more than 55 years. Bob was founding member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral. Bob faithfully served as a chanter & reader since childhood. He was also a member of the Mahiethett Society, St George Orthodox Cathedral men's club, and Syrian Orthodox Brotherhood Society. Bob was fluent in Arabic and served as an interpreter for area hospitals. Bob proudly worked for two years translating an Arabic mass booklet into English. Bob worked more than 31 years for John Hancock Insurance Company as District Sales Manager before retiring in 1978. He then co-owned and operated with his son, Kalil's Bakery on Hamilton St. CALLING HOURS will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 10th in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME, 370 Plantation St. Bob's funeral will be held Tuesday, March 11th from the FUNERAL HOME with a Service at 11:00 a.m. in St.George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna St. Burial will be in Mt View Cemetery, in Shrewsbury. A trisagion service will be held at 7:45 p.m. during the calling hours in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St George Orthodox Cathedral memorial fund, 30 Anna St or a Charity of the donor's choice
