Alfred “Freddie” DiVerdi, 86, of Worcester, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, after a period of declining health.
Freddie was born May 28, 1937 in Worcester, one of four sons of Michael and Rose (Ricardi) DiVerdi. Raised in the Italian neighborhood of Shrewsbury Street, Fred graduated from North High School, and then joined the U.S. Marine Corps serving his country proudly. Upon discharge and returning home to Worcester, Freddie enrolled in Worcester Junior College graduating as Phi Beta Kappa with a civil engineering degree. He then accepted a position with the State of Massachusetts Department of Transportation as a civil engineer, retiring after over thirty years on the job.
Freddie is survived by his brother Joseph M. DiVerdi and his wife Ann (Santa Maria) of West Boylston, and a sister-in-law, Esther (Reis) DiVerdi, in Rhode Island. He is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews, and many great- and great-great nieces and nephews, too. Freddie joins in heaven his parents, his brother Rocco R. and his wife Carmella, ‘Millie,’ (DiPasquale) DiVerdi and his brother John R. DiVerdi, as well.
Freddie was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and Our Lady of Loreto Parish. He had a circle of life-long, childhood friends, who knew him as “Hawkeye.” A nickname he earned for his legendary skill at playing pool. Fred excelled at all manner of sports and card games. In his later years he enjoyed traveling with his brothers and their families. He was a modest man who chose to live a simple life. He was a devoted son, a good brother and a beloved uncle. Freddie showed he cared by teasing –– and he teased a lot! He will be greatly missed.
