Anthony E Penny, 81 of South Yarmouth, formerly of Boylston and Worcester, passed away Tuesday, December 17th, 2019 after an illness.
Anthony one of five sons of the late Anthony and Lydia (Massei) Penny was born in Worcester, graduated from Worcester Boys trade where he was an all-star football player. Anthony began his career as an electrical supervisor, before purchasing with his brothers the Dodge Park Rest Home in Worcester and Smith Nursing Home in Millbury. Anthony then served as administrator of both facilities for the family many years before retiring. He furthered his education at Northeastern University earning an associate degree. Anthony also served in the Massachusetts Air National guard. He lived in Boylston many years before retiring and moving to his home on the Bass River in South Yarmouth.
Anthony is survived by his wife, Dolores (D’Elia) Penny; his two sons, Richard H Penny and his wife Michelle of Worcester, and Anthony E. Penny, Jr of South Yarmouth; his life’s pride and joy, his grandson Dominic R. Penny; a brother, Robert H. Penny and his wife Sandy; sister in law Eleanor Penny; Many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends both in Worcester and on the Cape. Three brothers, Francis J., John J., and Henry D. Penny predeceased him.
Anthony had a true passion for fly fishing. His passion had him traveling the world in search of trophy fish. In the late 70’s Anthony caught a sailfish that fell 9 inches shy of the elusive world record for length. He was also a licensed pilot who enjoyed flying his Cessna, notably to Lake Ontario where he had a home on the lake. He especially loved catching 30 lb. salmon with his boys, there. The greatest times he had were those fishing with his sons, grandson and friends whether on the Bass River, Lake Ontario, the Ocean of the Cape, or any lake he could visit. They were all special. Anthony had another passion for cooking; He was a perfectionist in the Kitchen at home or at the Rest Home, He enjoyed preparing gourmet meals for his family or giving pointers to his chefs at the facilities. Anthony truly believed that faith, family and friends were the most important parts of life and had room in his heart for everyone he met. He was very generous with his love, time and resources, and helped anyone he could. Anthony was a member of the Safari club, Ducks Unlimited and Knights of Columbus.
Friends and family are invited to a period of calling hours, Saturday, December 21st from 9:00 am to 11:00 am in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. followed by a procession to Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd where his funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his name can be made to the St Jude’s Children’s research hospital, 1 St. Jude place, Memphis. Tenn.
